The Guild at the Gordon Russell Design Museum

This summer the Gordon Russell Design Museum hosted the Worcestershire Guild of Contemporary Craft from 22nd August to 17th September 2017.

Housed in Gordon Russell’s original workshop the Museum collection is a fascinating window into 20th Century design. The collection includes many pieces design by Russell and his factory throughout the 20th century.

Gordon Russell valued the Arts & Crafts aesthetic but believed that uniting handmade and machine production was the best way to produce beautiful items at an affordable price. His factory pioneered utility furniture, during and following WW2 and made a huge number of cases for newly designed radios.

The work of Guild members was scattered throughout the museum, drawers were filled with jewellery and handmade books while ceramics and table lamps decorated larger pieces of furniture. The craft really enlivened the museum, dressing the furniture to feel lived in.

The Guild hopes to return to the museum in 2018, look out for updates in the future.
